A tall carved wooden staff " Oshe Shango" featuring the image of a kneeling devotee of Shango, Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Shango is the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning and the double-axe motif atop this piece is a metaphor for the thunderbolt that Shango hurls down from the sky at those who do not respect him. This staff features a finely carved female devotee with facial scars and shown holding her breast. The staff has a deep well handled surface and shows actual field use over many years. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria. Custom Mounted, the staff measures 20.25 inches tall. Provenance: Ex Ladislas Segy New York, Ex Rosembaum, NY , 1984.
