Almost 50 years before Thanos snapped half of humanity out of existence, another fatal snap rocked the Marvel Universe. In Amazing Spider-Man #121, Gwen Stacy dies when the Green Goblin tosses her off of the George Washington Bridge. When Spider-Man snags her with his webbing, the whiplash breaks her neck (writer Gerry Conway added a sound effect —SNAP— to make sure readers got the point). Gwen Stacy's death is widely considered to mark the end of Silver Age innocence, leading to the grittier, more cynical tone that's become the default setting of superhero comics ever since.
