Spider-Man, seeking revenge for the death of Gwen Stacy, tracks the Green Goblin to his hideout and gives him a near-fatal beating. Spidey stops before he goes too far, and the Goblin finishes the job for him, accidentally impaling himself on his own Goblin glider.
Gerry Conway was just 20 years old when he wrote this story, which not only marks the end of the Silver Age, but also signals a passing of the guard at Marvel, as younger talents assumed creative control from the aging legends who built the company. Conway concludes the story with a metallic metaphor that seems to parallel the transition from Silver to Bronze ages: "So do the PROUD men die: crucified, not on a cross of GOLD -- but on a stake of humble TIN."
