1800 Japanese Hyakunin Isshu Samurai Manyou Poetry Illustrated Woodblock Print
A rare, 19th century Japanese woodblock print of Manyou Hyakunin Isshu. Manyou Hyakunin Isshu is a classical Japanese anthology of one hundred Japanese waka (poems) by one hundred poets that recalls a kinder time during the 4th- to 8th-century, during which the poetry in the Manyou anthology was written. In contrast to the grand, lofty and elegant world of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, the Manyou features many poems that describe simple everyday life. Waka poetry from the Heian period which became very popular in Japan from the 16th century with this work becoming one of the most important literary works on poetry from the Edo period. The work contains calligraphy, notes and anecdotes on waka poetry.
This rare edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana for easier reading and includes illustrations of samurai, lords, ladies, and more on every page!
