Evidently originally smaller, it has been enlarged by removing the center of the original, relieving the edges with cuts for expansion and capping with a separate piece. As with much of armor styling, codpieces were copied from dress fashion of the day. Their prominence grew through the 16th century with the wearers benefiting from their increased size. The trend was repeated in armor with some achieving impressive proportions by the end of the century. As it provides no practical improvement, the construction here may be intended to emphasize the need for enlargement, which would be consistent with its provincial origin.
