Description
**First Time At Auction**

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, Ignazia, Gnathian, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery skyphos of captivating form decorated with fugitive pigment. The vessel presents with a discoid foot, an inverted bell-shaped body with a thin rim, and a pair of parabolic handles emanating outwards from just beneath the rim. The entire vessel save for the lower body and areas of the foot are enveloped with lustrous black glaze that has developed shimming silvery iridescence. Painted on the obverse are registers of tongues, dashes, stippling, ivy leaves, acanthus leaves, ribbons, spoked wheels, and a central, white-hued alabastron, and the verso presents ivy vines with flowers and additional tongues. An attractive composition from ancient Ignazia! Size: 5.8" W x 3.8" H (14.7 cm x 9.7 cm)

Condition
One handle reattached to terminals, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to foot, body, handles, and basin walls, with touch-up painting to only a few areas of exterior fugitive pigment, and light encrustations. Great preservation to fugitive pigment, and wonderful silvery iridescence across interior and exterior surfaces. Old inventory label beneath base.
