Description
Among the tribes of Papua New Guinea warriors are awarded gope boards for each act of bravery they perform in battle. Gope boards are carved in relief and then painted with lime powder, red ochre, and other native paints. Gope boards have a similar style and may depict the face of an ancestral spirit. This wood panel measures 36 x 9.75 inches. Provenance: From the collection of art historian Evan Maurer, co-author of Tabwa: The Rising of a New Moon & The Intelligence of Forms: An Artist Collects African Art.
