Description
Four large shell necklaces, Possibly Papuan Gulf; Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea. Each of cowrie shells sewn to fiber necklaces. Two pierced at the sides of the shells and attached with native fiber; one multiple strand example that may have been a currency; one with a more complex attachment with three pendant conus shells. All with fine patination and use.Acquired by Marc Seidler c. 1983. The smallest measures 34 inches around, the largest a remarkable 138 inches around!
