Fine looking stained red hardwood, with painted vine border with a 1782 date as shown. Looks to be Mexican or South American (painted parrot bird decoration), and especially given the provenance: Robert Laughlin, a cultural anthropologist, and son of Ledie Laughlin, author of Pewter in America: Its Makers and Their Marks. This family collected from North and South America extensively.
