Frank Duveneck (American, 1848-1919), Mary Mallon
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1900, l.l., with label on verso inscribed Mary Mallon, and old Closson's Galleries, Cincinnati label; 24 x 20 in.
A well-documented portrait of Mary Mallon, born 1893, son of prominent Cincinnati lawyer Guy Mallon, she was seven years old at the time of this portrait. In dark shades with an emphasis on red tones, the portrait is more reminiscent of Duveneck's colorful work during the time he spent in Italy, and is more academic than characteristic portraits executed in Cincinnati, when the artist was later in life.
