Description: Copper-engraved double-hemisphere map of the world, modern hand-coloring. 14.5x26 cm. (5¾x10¼").Double-hemisphere map of the world surrounded by allegorical figures, with California an island. The map was issued by Jan Jansson van Waesberge, as described by Shirley: "Jansson van Waesberge, the successor to the publishing business of his father-in-law Jan Jansson, brought out in 1676 a further edition of Cluver's popular Introductionis as edited by Petrus Bertius. In some copies the 1630 world map by Cloppengurgh as revised by Jansson's heirs has been inserted. In other copies I have seen there is a new world map with allegorical figures in the cusps and corners [referring to the present map]. There was a further edition in 1682 and perhaps in 1683."
