AFTER NICOLAS SANSON (FRENCH, 1600-1667) MAP OF CALIFORNIA AS AN ISLAND, hand-colored engraving on laid paper, titled "AUDIENCE DE / GUADALAJARA / NOUVEAU MEXIQUE / CALIFORNIE, &c. / Par N. Sanson d'Abbe / ville Geogr Ordin du / Roy" in a winged cartouche in upper right corner, featuring California as an island with indented northern coastline, "Floride" along the right hand side, Mexico with several towns and tiny pictorial buildings. Housed under UV glass in a modern gilt frame, backing paper with gallery label for Antique Prints, Inc. of Ocean View, DE. Circa 1683. 9 1/4" x 8" sight, 15 1/2" x 13 7/8" OA.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition with two vertical creases, toning/staining along lower edge, a short tear near center of lower edge, a long crease, or possible tear, along right hand side near edge, scattered light spotting, spots of ghosting from being folded, penciled "+/- 1680" in lower left corner, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.Â
