Description
11th-12th century AD. A bronze mace head with cuboid body composed of three rows of pyramidal knobs to four walls; square socket. See Popov, S., The Maces from the Present Bulgarian Lands (10th – 17th c. AD) Vatevi collection, Plovdiv, 2015. 270 grams, 48mm (2"). From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980. According to Dr. Popov, maces were among the most widespread weapons throughout the Middle Ages, especially in Byzantium and the Balkans, and were used by the aristocracy as well as by the rank and file soldiers.
