A Rare Large Aloeswood Brush Pot, Carved and pierced around the body with a continuos scene of figures surrounded by pine trees, rocky formations, and architecture, all set in front of a mountainous landscape, of natural undulating form, the wood of a darkish brown tone. 18th Century Height: 5 5/8 inches (14.3 cm) [Wear, minor losses, chips, repairs. This condition report states major condition issues only] Note:Aloeswood is a highly valued type of wood that is typically only found in small segments of usable material, which were traditionally pieced together to make small scholar's objects. The honey-like fragrance of this wood, reputedly the result of honey ants nesting in the dead wood, also made it valuable in the manufacture of incense.Aloeswood brush pots seem to have been a specialty of the Qing imperial court, and the present example is very similar in execution to examples found in the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of the Palace Museum - 44 - Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 21, no. 20; p. 22, no. 21; and p. 52, no. 49.
