Item Details
Description
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a fine and intact porcelain cup with a bell-shaped profile and hand painted figural motifs on the exterior. The cup rests on a ring base and has a "horse hoof" shape, flaring to the thin mouth rim that is painted with a gold wash over the white glaze. Around the exterior are three figures painted in vibrant powder enamel colors; 2 figures play musical instruments, and the third man offers a coin to a three legged "money toad" known as jin chan, an auspicious toad or frog of good fortune. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 1.75" H (8.9 cm x 4.4 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-M. Kobiashi collection, Hawaii, USA, 1960 to 2000
