East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This is a charming porcelain cup with a bell-shaped profile and hand painted decorations on the exterior. The cup rests on a flat base and flares outward, a style that is known as a "horse hoof" cup due to the shape. The thin rim is painted with a gold wash, the interior bowl is glazed white. The robed scholars on the exterior are painted in vibrant powder enamel on the white ground, the 3 elders are seated around a table laid out with cups, like this one, with a young boy attendant, and some pastoral scenery around them. Horse hoof cups often came in nesting sets, the imagery on each cup a progression of an overarching story that is revealed when all cups are laid out.
