Hard boards, original publisher's illustrated cloth [soiling and wear, cloth creases between spine and front board: see photos], 5 1/2" x 8"; inscription "Geo Ehlinger / Doris Elaine Ehringer" on the first blank page, two frontispieces, 289 pages + publisher's advertising, 60 b/w text illustrations, soiling, good / very good condition.
Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law. The prince, mistaken for Tom, is forced to live a pauper's life, while Tom unwillingly takes on the life of a prince. And in the end, each boy finds the king inside himself.
