Description
A Veracruz Stone Yoke Eastern Mexico, c. 400-700 AD Speckled gray stone, the ends carved in relief to depict half of a face with a large headdress. Remains of red cinnabar in the grooves. The uncarved areas with a fine smooth surface. In excellent condition, minor time stains. Stone yokes were most likely trophies given to accomplished ball players. They resemble the wood yokes worn around the waist used to deflect a ball during ceremonial ball games. Custom metal stand. This lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Tlapacoya, Santa Fe, NM Length: 16 inches
