A gold-lacquer ryoshibako (document box) of the Meiji (1868-1912) era. Decorated in predominantly gold takamaki-e and e-nashiji with inrobuta or flush-fitting cover. This massive box depicts a traditional Japanese structure sitting amongst ample foliage in a mountainous scene with a meandering river below. The distant mountains cross the boundaries between the lid and body of the box giving all sides of this magnificent box a complete panoramic view. The interior lid of the box is also decorated with a similar scene that shows the thatched roof dwelling in more detail. The interior and underside of the box is accented with rich gilt and copper toned nashiji lacquer. No markings or signatures noted. Box measures 17 1/2"(l) x 13 1/2"(w) x 7"(h).
