Description
1797 1ed History of Pennsylvania by Proud Colonial Americana Penn QUAKERS
A first edition of the first published history of Pennsylvania! Written by Robert Proud, this work focuses primarily on the earliest times of Pennsylvania, immigration, the rise of Quaker prominence, the plan to build Philadelphia, settler and colonist exploration and hardships, William Penn and his enemies, a section dedicated to the death of Charles II and the rise of James II, and the establishment of boarders between Pennsylvania and Maryland. An impressive and important work of colonial Americana. A second volume was published the following year.
According to Sabin,
“A learned and valuable work…The author was a native of Yorkshire, England, who settled in Philadelphia in 1759, where he resided till his death in 1813. For many years he was teacher in a school attended chiefly by members of the Society of Friends.”
Per Larned,
“Among the older histories of Pennsylvania this is the standard work; written from the Quaker standpoint. It contains an introduction on Quakerism and William Penn…it is accurate and authoritative.”
