Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of heavy gauge tin retablos featuring hand-painted religious iconography. The first is a painting that shows the cleansing power of Christ's blood; the crucified hand of the Christ is centered, the blood pouring into an overflowing chalice with six lambs drinking from the resulting fountain. Above the hand, the 5 members of the Holy Family are seated on clouds: The Virgin Mary, and her mother, St. Anne, the Christ Child, St. Joseph holding a flowering staff with roses, and St. Joachim holding an ordinary staff. The other retablo is the crowned Virgin of Guadalupe with hands together in a prayerful gesture, and lowered eyes, surrounded by a mandorla of rays, standing above a cherub with outspread green and yellow wings. As is customary, she wears the traditional blue mantle with golden star motifs and trim. Size of each: 14" L x 10" W (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Arkansas, USA, 1950s-1960s
