Description
1876 UTAH 1st ed Simpson Explorations Mormons Native American Indians California
Captain J.H. Simpsons “Report of Explorations” is one of the best 19th-century accounts of surveying and exploring of Utah. It covers routes to the American west including the shortest route from Utah into California. Of this route, Howes says:
“This route, explored in 1859, shortened the distance to California by 250 miles; it was adopted by the overland mail, pony express and telegraph. The report was submitted in 1861, but publication had to be deferred because of the Civil War. Portions however appeared in the authors The Shortest Route to California.
However, one of the best and most desirable aspects of this work is the extensive information on the Indians in the Utah Territory, Native American languages, and Indian customs.
