The Finish (America's Cup Race)

20 x 27 in., frame: 25 1/2 x 32 1/2 in.
Provenance: A wedding gift to Oliver G. Hicks and Emily Snow Sisson, Bristol Ferry, Rhode Island; by descent to within the family to their great-grandson.
Other Notes: The painting depicts the racing yachts Puritan and Genesta competing in the fifth America’s Cup Race of 1885 hosted by the New York Yacht Club. Puritan , one of three successful America’s Cup defenders designed by Boston designer Edward Burgess, beat the British challenger Genesta to win the 1885 Cup. The unsuccessful challenger Genesta was designed by John Beavor-Webb for owner Sir Richard Sutton, 5th baronet, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron, England. The burgees flying on the committee boat represent the Royal Yacht Squadron, Eastern Yacht Club, and the New York Yacht Club.
