[WORLD WAR II]. Tooled leather wall plaque identified to Captain Thomas E. Burns, "Flying Sheriff," B-24J Liberator Ship 240, 491st Bomb Group, 854th Bomb Squadron, Crew 1142 Wolfpack.
Tooled leather wall plaque, 15 x 18 1/2 in. framed to approx. 18 x 21 in. (dampstaining on right side, light scuffing, unexamined outside frame). Highly detailed decoration particularly on the airplane body which features "Flying Sheriff" nose art.
The B-24 bomber was a model of airplane used extensively throughout World War II in all major theaters and in all branches of service. Known as the "Flying Coffin" it was notoriously difficult to fly. The 854th Bombardment Squadron was a United States Army Air Forces unit which was deployed to the European Theater and participated in the strategic bombing of Germany.
