WHAT IS A REDUCTION WOODBLOCK PRINT? Reduction woodblock printing is a technique mainly used by contemporary printmakers. While in traditional woodblock printmaking a separate block is carved for each color, the reduction technique uses only one block. For each color a separate layer is carved onto the same block, thus each progessing layer destroys the previous one. At the end of the process the block is basically destroyed. This requires a careful planning, and creates a limited edition that can never be reprinted.
