East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th century CE. A remarkable, hand-carved figure of a Bodhisattva depicted kneeling with hands together in the Anjali Mudra or Namaste position, also known as gassho in Japanese. The tranquil deity gently bows his head in prayer, presenting large, downturned eyes below a sweeping brow and an annular urna, a wide nose, and bowed lips held closed, all flanked by a pair of lengthy ears with billowing lobes. A long robe cascades in folds down his body, hung from his left shoulder, while bracelets and a necklace further adorn his body. His hair is piled atop his head, forming a type of ushnisha, and surrounded by a lovely crown. Liberal remains of white stucco and black pigment beautifully embellish the smooth surface of this serene example. Size: 7.4" L x 8" W x 14.1" H (18.8 cm x 20.3 cm x 35.8 cm)
