East Asia, northern Japan, Ainu peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A personal knife used for myriad utilitarian tasks by the native Japanese Ainu peoples known as a makiri. The single-edged, carbon-steel blade bears a thin spine that tapers to a pointed tip. The wooden handle features three bars of linear and crosshatched patterns, and the intricate sheath exhibits an elaborate curvilinear motif set against a densely incised ground. An integral suspension loop behind the handle once housed a pendant likely made from resin beads and deer antler. Size (w/ sheath): 2.375" W x 14.3" H (6 cm x 36.3 cm); (blade): 4.4" L (11.2 cm)
