Description
Pages from the March 18, May 13 and June 17 1826 editions of the Niles' Weekly Register (Baltimore, Maryland) concerning the "Jefferson Lottery", Thomas Jefferson's attempt at using a public lottery to help alleviate his debts. Over 11,000 tickets were planned to be sold for 10 dollars a piece, with prizes including Monticello and Shadwell Mills. But interest faded with Jefferson's death, and the lottery was never held. Monticello was sold in 1831, and Jefferson's grandson assumed the remainder of his debts.
