Marmaduke Johnson Signed Land Deed for Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1668
1p, measuring 7.5" x 11.75", Cambridge, Massachusetts, dated October 7, 1668. A land deed signed "Marmaduke Johnson", formalizing an agreement made between Nicholas Cady and Gorge Laurance for six acres of wetland and five acres of meadowland for an unknown amount. With the signed marks of Nicholas Cady and his wife, Judith. Witnessed by Johnson and Zeachariah Hicks. The document has flattened folds, toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Chipping at edges and folds with loss of some text. Repaired with paper on verso and silked. Boldly signed.
Marmaduke Johnson (1629-1674) was an English printer and stationer, born into a well-respected printing and bookselling family in London. In 1660, at the behest of printers Samuel Green and John Eliot, Johnson traveled to the colonies, arriving in Boston in June 1660. He helped print the first edition of Eliot's Indian Bible, along with more than 40 other works. Johnson eventually set up his own printing shop in Boston in 1674.
