Two Bostonian Shipping Documents, With A Possible Connection to Boston Tea Party
A pair of shipping documents for goods traveling to and from colonial Boston. The two sheets have flattened folds and light edge wear and toning. Both boldly signed.
The first is 1p, measuring 9.5" x 5", London, dated January 7, 1714. Signed by shipmaster "Moses Thomas", recording the shipment of one case of merchandise from Messers Sale and Dodson upon the ship "Amity of London", bound for Boston. The goods were to be delivered to Capt. Gilbert Bunt & Comb or their Assigns, for a fee of £3.
The second is 1p, measuring 8.5" x 4.5", Boston, dated May 4, 1751. Signed by shipmaster "Joseph Hutchins", recording the shipment of a box of Iron Ware from Jacob Rowe upon the schooner "The Spy", bound for Charleston, South Carolina. The goods were to be delivered to a Mr. Charles Stevenson, for a fee of twenty shillings. It is possible that merchant Jacob Rowe was the brother of John Rowe (1715-1787) who's tea ship, the "Eleanor", was involved in the Boston Tea Party. Jacob emigrated to Quebec in 1741, but his son (also named John Rowe) remained in Boston and was effectively adopted by the elder John Rowe and his wife Hannah.
