Newfoundland, the easternmost province of Canada, first came under the control of England in 1583 and became one of the country's earliest permanent colonies in the New World. From that time, multiple colonial settlements were attempted on the island from 1610 to 1728. By 1620, hundreds of fishing boats worked the Grand Banks, employing some 10,000 sailors, with many coming from Normandy or Brittany.
