Description
A vintage silver gelatin photograph of Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi (1882-1956), dressed and coiffed in his role as Dracula, the dapper vampire he famously portrayed. N.d., but ca. 1930s. Matte finish and sepia-colored. The photograph is extremely desirable as it is not inscribed or presented by Lugosi to any recipient but is still signed as "Sincerely / Bela Lugosi" near center bottom. Light corner creases are found at the bottom left. A few insignificant stains confined to the left margin, only mentioned for accuracy, else superb. 8"x 10." Accompanied by a Beckett Letter of Authenticity, certification number A000307, dated January 23, 2017; a corresponding Beckett label with the same certification number is found on the reverse of the photograph.
A photograph with a similar pose, but dedicated, sold at RR Auction in 2011 for over $10,000.
Bela Lugosi played Dracula first on Broadway in 1927, and then in Hollywood in 1931. Lugosi certainly had the looks and gravitas to play undead supervillains, but not the grasp of English; his Hungarian accent severely limited his film opportunities after the 1930s.
