Item Details
Description
June H. Carr, Photographer. Plate glass and silver foil sign. Approx. 17 x 5 ½ in.
Superb original sign advertising South Carolina photographer June H. Carr (1877-1960). A noted photographer, Carr primarily worked in Cherokee County and documented the evolution of the area, including Limestone College. Born in Ithaca, New York, Carr came to Gaffney in 1902 and remained there for the rest of his life. His works were eventually published in a posthumous retrospective. This sign, which no doubt hung proudly at his studio in Gaffney’s Baker building for many years is comprised of printed plate glass with silver foil sandwiched underneath to bring out the block lettering – a style popular in the 1920s - and is secured in a lovely and original wood frame. In addition to his fine body of work, Carr entered the record books when his photographs of a nursing home fire became the very first photographs transmitted over wire by the Associated Press. The sign is in nearly flawless original condition.
