Item Details
Description
"Two Forms" Cast aluminum figural sculpture composition attached to square black granite base; signed and dated "Myford 78"

Jim Myford attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he earned an Art Education degree in 1962 and began a teaching career that spanned more than 35 years. He went on to earn masters degrees in both Art Education (1968) and Sculpture (1978) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Jim joined the faculty at Slippery Rock University in 1968 and became an accomplished and recognized educator before retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1997. He served as Chairman of the Art Department at SRU from 1987-1996.

In 2012, Slippery Rock University named its new sculpture facility on campus the James C. Myford Art Sculpture Building in honor and recognition of his longtime contributions as an educator and artist.

He was also a gifted and accomplished sculptor, James C. Myford sculptures are found in corporate, museum, university, public and private collections throughout the United States. His work is also in collections in Japan, Sweden, Venezuela, Australia and Brazil. James Myford began creating aluminum sculpture after participating in a workshop in the 1970s sponsored by Pittsburgh-based Alcoa, an aluminum manufacturer. The artist used the methods developed for this sculpture in his work. He carved Styrofoam and buried the pieces in foundry sand. Molten aluminum is poured onto the foam, leaving an identical aluminum form.

Jim Myford was also a noted collector the Palmer Museum of Art presented Prints by Sculptors from the Collection of James and Betty Myford. It featured a wide range of subjects and printmaking processes, including etching, aquatint, lithography, woodcut, and screenprinting and included works by Leonard Baskin, Lynn Chadwick, Eduardo Chillida, Jim Dine, Sorel Etrog, Barbara Hepworth, Alexander Liberman, Joan Miro, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Joel Shapiro, Ernest Trova, Peter Voulkos, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Louise Nevelson, and Beverly Pepper in this exhibition, His larger outdoor work can be seen on several university campuses, corporate headquarters and in numerous cities across America, but he received the most satisfaction in knowing that his work would be available to those who most influenced and encouraged his passion to create, most of whom have roots in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania.
