Item Details
Description
American Colonial oil on canvas three-quarters portrait of a young woman attributed to Robert Feke (Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1707-1751). Subject is depicted seated against a partial brown backdrop with a landscape vista visible to the right. She is attired in a low cut soft coral or pink satin dress trimmed with white muslin about the bodice and with white muslin undesleeves and draped with a blue satin wrap. The subject is holding a sprig of white flowers and roses in her delicately detailed left hand while her right hand cradles the flowers and rests in her lap. Her brown hair is upswept and is curled to one side. Unsigned. Inscription en verso reads "Portrait by FEKE Early American Painter". Housed in a late 19th/early 20th century carved wood frame. Sight: 37 1/8" H x 27 1/8" W. Framed: 40 3/4" H x 33" W. Note: This portrait is stylistically similar to another portrait painted by Feke of Miss Willamina Moore, featured on page 71 of the book "Library of American Art: Robert Feke, Colonial Portrait Painter" by Henry Wilder Foote. Both portraits depict the sitter posed and gazing slightly left or right with a similar landscape backdrop. Additionally, both are attired in nearly identical type dress and both have very detailed delicate hands which hold flowers. Finally, both subjects have large dark oval eyes which is a characteristic of Feke's work. See the similar portrait at this link: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/200963117/wilhelmina-bond.

The Estate of Martha T. Daniel, Bristol, Tennessee. This painting was originally acquired by Peck Daniels, uncle of the consignor, who was a collector and dealer of 18th Century English and American antiques in Bristol, VA.
Condition
Canvas has been relined. Some minor inpainting noted to lower quadrant near flowers and some varnish run. Overall light craquelure with some light scratching noted to lower dress area, rubbing to canvas edges.
