TIFFANY EGYPTIAN REVIVAL FAVRILE GLASS BEETLE AND 18K GOLD PAIR OF EARRINGS, BY LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY, TIFFANY & CO. signed. Designed as an iridescent favrile glass beetles. Circa 1915. Measures 32.7mm total length. Scarab measures 12mm x 6.2mm approx. weighs 4.2g.. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the firm's founder. With his father's support, Louis developed his artistic sensibilities and, through experimentation and study, became the leading exponent of American Art Nouveau. Louis debuted his signature favrile glassware in 1893. It's shimmering, iridescent qualities proved to be the perfect medium for what he termed his "beetle" jewelry. Based on the scarab, the Egyptian symbol of resurrection and immortality, the spectral qualities of favrile glass practically mirrored the insect's luminescence. Tiffany mounted the scarabs in enclosed bezels, similar to the Egyptian method, to protect their edges from damage. A selection of Louis Comfort Tiffany's beetle jewelry mounted in 18 karat gold was featured in TIffany & Co.'s Blue Book from 1909.
