BIOGRAPHY:
Marinus Johannes Drulman de Jongere was born in the Netherlands in 1912. He lived in Amsterdam most of his life. An impressionist painter, de Jongere is well known for his dramatic images of the Harbor at Rotterdam during its shipping glory days in the early 50's and 60's. He was highly skilled at depicting all of the harbors' intricacies and activity. Drulman painted under the pseudonym "de Jongere". He signed his works "M. de Jongere". During the German occupation of the Netherlands he signed his works under his actual name, "Drulman". In his early years he traveled and studied in Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Germany. During this time he painted images of the mountains and cities in these areas His works are highly collected in the Netherlands, and throughout Europe and the United States. His paintings are in some very important collections. In the late 1950's and early 1960's he painted 28 shipping images for the wealthy shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. These images depicted all of the ships in Onassis' fleet. In the early 1960's he was visited in his studio by United States President Lyndon Johnson. Johnson ended up buying five of his paintings some of which were later displayed in the White House. As a result his works made their way into the collections of many important United States European diplomats. Drulman de Jongere has a very strong auction record with the European offices of Sotheby's and Christies auction houses. Drulman de Jongere died in the Netherlands in 1978.
