Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-painted tin retablo that tenderly represents the Virgin Mary and Christ Child arranged in a composition traditionally referred to as N.S. Refugio de Pecadores (Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners) framed by a wreath of red roses, the entire scene floating upon heavenly clouds. The Virgin has a golden crown and supports the Christ Child who wears a matching crown and whose body is covered by a sheer robe. Mary wears a red robe with yellow stars and a fine cape across her right shoulder initialed with her monogram. The Christ Child rests his right hand on her right arm and grips her hand. It is a touching scene that clearly follows the tenets of the 18th century Italian source for this composition. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints, and the translation of the word retablo literally means "behind the altar." Size: 13.75" L x 10" W (34.9 cm x 25.4 cm)

In 1719, a Jesuit missionary brought a version of a painting originally created for an altar formerly at Frascati, Italy, in the style of Guido or Salvator Rosa, to the city of Zacatecas in Mexico. The painting inspired the locals to adopt N.S., Refugio de Pecadores as their patron, and the composition of this retablo was modeled upon that painting's composition. Renditions of the original Italian painting were among the most favored in retablo art.
