Description

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A hand-carved stone tool of a rectangular form meant for sharpening the stone blades used in adzes. The sturdy implement features slightly slanted ends as well as 4 sweeping faces exhibiting pleasantly smooth surface textures. The edges of the adze blades would be dragged and scraped across the surfaces to better hone their edges for tasks like tilling earth or chopping wood. Size: 6.125" L x 1.9" W (15.6 cm x 4.8 cm)
