Prince George of Bavaria - a gift sword for Emmerich Baron of Godin, dated 1910
A fine interim sword with nickel-plated, single-edged blade (rust marks) with profuse etchings and double fullers on both sides, the shoulder featuring the etched signature "Lorenz Stanko München", on the obverse the crowned Bavarian coat of arms and gilt name "Georg Prinz von Bayern" surrounded by scrolling leaves and trophies, on the reverse a cartouche with the gilt dedication "Seinem Pagen Freiherrn von Godin / Berlin 18. Januar 1910". Bar hilt of non-ferrous metal with fine gold plating, the langet with a striding Bavarian lion on the obverse, the engraved coat of arms of the Barons of Godin on the reverse. With leather-backed silver sword knot (darkened, cracked). Black lacquered iron scabbard (rusty) with one suspension ring. Partially damaged, signs of age. Length 94 cm.
As a boy Emmerich Baron of Godin (1881-1934) was sent to the Königlich-Bayerische Pagerie, the royal Bavarian cadet corps. He joined the Infantry Lifeguard Regiment in 1900 and was promoted to Oberleutnant in 1911. One year later he was sent to the war academy for further training to serve in the general staff. Godin's brother was Michael Baron of Godin, who suppressed the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich in November 1923 as commander of the Munich units of the Bavarian police.
