Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Roman Empire, Turkey, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A free-blown glass unguentarium of an elongated 'candlestick' form with an aqua hue. The vessel rests on a slightly concave base and the body is a delicate bell shape that narrows to a long neck with a rolled lip. The glass is covered with stunning silvery and golden iridesence that runs from the rim all the way to the base of the vessel, casting a flattering glow upon the surface! The unusually long neck was made to keep perfumes, unguents, or any precious liquid from evaporating too easily. Size: 3.18" W x 6.5" H (8.1 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Virginia, USA collection, collected pre-1970 in Turkey.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#158446
Condition
Surface wear and nicks to rim commensurate with age. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Areas of deposits, particularly on interior rim and base. Liberal iridescence throughout.
