Description
A carved wooden shrine object with tall slender ringed neck, carved face and top hat, embellished with animal hide beard, red textile and encrusted surface. To the Bidjogo peoples, the spirits of the loved ones can be contacted after death. The surviving members create a wooden figure (iran otibago) as a sacred space for the ancestor spirit to reside. Locals have also stated that the figures are also used as a medium for consultation with the Supreme Being (Orrebuco-Ocoto). The idol measures 19 inches tall on wooden base. Provenance: The Robert Banks collection, Maryland. `
