An Indo-Portuguese late 17th century carved wood coffer
The hinged lid with a foliate carved edge, enclosing a later hinged lidded box to one end, the body carved with cornucopiae of flowers and trails of foliate branches with a central winged cherub mask, each angle carved with a rustic male or female caryatid above a winged cherub mask, on recumbent carved hairy beast form front supports, 167cm wide x 70cm deep x 73cm high, (65 1/2in wide x 27 1/2in deep x 28 1/2in high)

Unfortunately it has not been possible to identify the timber used but evidently it is a softwood.
Warping to the top.
Old worm.
The rear feet are quite heavily worm eaten.
Shrinkage cracks to one end of top.
Shrinkage commensurate with age.
Area of lighter discolouration and old marks to the top.
The side handles later.
We have the key and it is certainly engaging in the lock, but at the moment it is catching rather a lot (probably due to movement in the top) which is making opening the hinged lid very difficult indeed.
Please note however that previously we did manage to open the lid.
Overall wear and minor repairs to surfaces consistent with age.
The hinges and lock are later.
In good decorative and sound order.
