Dimensions: 11.8 X 15 in.

Description: This is a handsome map covering of the Caribbean plus the Southern US, Central America, and northern South America. It presents a fascinating configuration of Florida as wedge-shaped with a flat bottom. As this map predates the Louisiana Purchase, there is a large New France. The chart is covered with interesting notations concerning the history of the region, territorial claims, and the Spanish gold fleet. The seas are fully engraved with ruled lines and an extensive array of trade-wind arrows. A long notation gives sailing directions from Europe, Africa, Florida to Jamaica, and from Jamaica to the Windward Passage. Much detail is offered as to topography, rivers, lakes and settlements, such as Havana, Port Royal (of pirate fame), Caracca (Caracas), Panama (city), but not yet New Orleans. Compass rose and block-style title cartouche are shown. It was published in Gentleman's Magazine.
