Wells & Fargo Signed 1865 American Express Company Stock Certificate
A stock certificate from the American Express Company signed by company president Henry Wells (1805-1878) as "Henry Wells"; company secretary William G. Fargo (1818-1881) as "Wm G. Fargo"; and company treasurer Alex Holland as "Alex Holland" along the bottom margin. Stock certificate No. 1639 granted "Mary H. Livingston of Schenectady [New York]" four $500 shares of Capital Stock on January 10, 1865. Partly printed and partly handwritten on cream paper with a braided black border, with an iconic “Safety & Dispatch” vignette at the top center depicting a guard dog. Bearing the usual clerical stamps. The transfer section verso is blank. Expected paper folds, a small chip along the bottom edge. Uneven toning and isolated discoloration. Trimmed at left. Minor ink erosion affecting the stockholder's name verso mentioned just for accuracy, else very good to near fine. 12.125" x 8.25."
The American Express Company was consolidated in 1850 by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo, and John W. Butterfield, three leaders of the flourishing express mail industry. Express mail companies provided credit and transport services to travelers beginning in the early nineteenth century, and later affiliated with banks, railroads, steamship companies, and others to become major financial institutions.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
