1p, measuring 12” x 8.75”, New York, dated January 28, 1914. A Wool Worth Building Safe Deposit Company certificate, No. 4, issuing 10 shares ($100 each) of stock to Hubert J. Parson. Signed "F. W. Woolworth" as President at the lower margin. Countersigned by the companies treasurer. With an elaborate green border and a bronze embossed paper seal at the bottom left. On verso is transfer information signed by Parson, dated February 2, 1914. With faint toning throughout. Chipping and minor loss to the bottom edge. Punch holes through Woolworth's signature.
Frank Winfield Woolworth (1852-1919) was the founder of F.W. Woolworth Company and the operator of numerous "Five-and-Dime" stores throughout the country. He is well-known for his innovative practice (now common practice) of buying products directly from manufacturers and selling them at a fixed rate. Woolworth also pioneered the use of self-service display counters. One year prior to this certificate, Woolworth built the Woolworth Building in New York City, which at the time was the tallest building in the world, measuring 792 feet. At the time of his death, he was worth $76.5 million.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
