Description

George A. Custer Civil War-Era Photograph

A Civil War-era albumen print photograph depicting U.S. Army Cavalry commander George A. Custer (1839-1876), displayed in a handsome thermoplastic case. The photograph shows Custer in a military uniform, his single-star shoulder epaulet suggesting a portrait sitting date of ca. 1863-1865, the period when Custer was promoted to Brigadier General and then Brevet Brigadier General. The black thermoplastic case features a central vignette, recto and verso, depicting farm tools and implements including a beehive, plow, scythe, and grain stack. The photograph has a minor vertical wrinkle, else very good to near fine. The case is missing the glass, otherwise fully intact and complete with the decorative velvet pad, brass mat, and brass preserver. Slight damage to the side, corresponding to a clasp no longer present. Else near fine. The closed case measures approximately 3.25" x 3.75" x 1."

George Armstrong Custer had a distinguished Civil War record serving with the Michigan Brigade. After the war, the intrepid cavalryman scouted in Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and other Indian Territory in the American West. He was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
