Group of 14 Early Currency Notes, Ca. 18th and 19th Century
A unique group of fourteen various early currency notes, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The various notes are of varying denomination and size, ranging from 3 pence to $50. Heavy wear to most, with folds, creases, and areas of toning and soiling throughout. Chipping to edges along with a few holes or tears in places. One note has been repaired with tape. Please refer to the photographs for further condition details. Property of the Chrysler Museum of Art, sold to benefit future museum acquisitions. The group includes:
1. Three Pence. Measuring 2.25" x 2.75", Pennsylvania, dated April 10, 1777.
2. $2.50 Note. Measuring 6.625" x 3", Norfolk, Virginia, dated June 1, 1861. Numbered 671.
3. $50 Note. Measuring 7.25" x 3.25", Norfolk, Virginia, dated January 17, 1856. Numbered 971.
4. $20 Note. Measuring 7.5" x 3", Norfolk, Virginia, dated Ca. 1859. Numbered 3151.
5. 25 Cent Note. Measuring 3.5" x 2", Washington, D.C., dated Ca. 1874. Numbered 67 I.
6. Thirty Shilling Note. Measuring 2.75" x 4", Rhode Island, dated January 15, 1776. Numbered 3966.
7. Maybrick & Co. Check. Measuring 8" x 3", Norfolk, Virginia, dated October 11, 1879. Numbered 389, a payment of $30,246.34 drawn on The Exchange National Bank for six drafts.
8. $1.00 Note. Measuring 6.25" x 2.5", Portsmouth, Virginia, dated October 29, 1862. Numbered 17149.
9. 50 Cent Note. Measuring 6.5" x 2.5", Portsmouth, Virginia, dated October 29, 1862. Numbered 5329.
10. $1.00 Note. Measuring 7" x 3", Richmond, Virginia, dated July 21, 1869. Numbered 19347.
11. 5 Cent Note. Measuring 2.5" x 1.75", No place, dated March 2, 186[?].
12. $1.00 Note. Measuring 5.75" x 2.75", Portsmouth, Virginia, dated October 7, 1861. Numbered 12083.
13. $3.00 Note. Measuring 6.75" x 2.75", Elizabeth City, undated [Ca. 1800s].
