William T. Sherman signature on a cream-colored card, 3.875" x 2.25" "W. T. Sherman / Maj Gen'l". Slight foxing and evidence of prior mounting on corners.
William T. Sherman (1820-1891) An American soldier, businessman, educator, and author, served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–1865), receiving recognition for his command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Although William T. Sherman retired from the army in 1884, he remained in contact with many war veterans. After his death in 1891, many veteran organizations, such as the Society of the Army of the Tennessee spearheaded movements to commemorate the Civil War general with a statue.
