Gordon Granger Signature on a 3.875” x 2.25" cream-colored stock card boldly signed as "Gordon Granger” and inscribed "Maj Genl U.S.V" in bold and vibrant ink. Evidence of prior mounting on corners.
Gordon Granger was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War. Granger is best remembered for issuing General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, further informing residents of, and enforcing, Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which set all Confederate states' slaves free on January 1, 1863.
